A vast coastal wetland with exceptional biodiversity and home to unique species such as the Dalmatian pelican.
The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day, as it is a protected natural area. From Lushnjë, you can drive via the SH4 road in about 30–45 minutes; there are also local buses and taxis. Check the official AKZM website for detailed maps.
Entry to the park is free for all visitors. However, if you hire guides or take boat trips on the lagoon, there may be small fees of 5–10 euros per person. Check for updates on the Albanian Protected Areas Agency website.
A typical visit lasts 3 to 6 hours, ideal for exploring trails and birdwatching platforms. If you include a boat ride on the lagoon, allow a full day. Plan according to your pace so you do not miss the best wildlife sightings.
Declared a national park in 2004, it is one of Albania’s most important wetlands and has been a Ramsar site since 2004 due to its unique biodiversity, with more than 250 bird species. It protects vital coastal ecosystems and is key to conservation in the Balkans.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for watching bird migrations. Avoid peak summer because of the heat, but early mornings or sunsets are perfect for sightings at any time of year.
Some main trails and the visitor center are accessible, but many paths are dirt tracks and not suitable for wheelchairs. I recommend contacting the park information center (+355 69 20 45 678) for adapted options or vehicle tours.
Nearby in Lushnjë, visit the local market or the Lushnjë Mosque; about 1 hour away, Krujë Castle or the beaches of Durrës. For more history, Berat, a UNESCO site, is about 2 hours away by car.
Bring mosquito repellent, binoculars, water, and comfortable shoes; use sunscreen and a hat. Hire a local guide for birdwatching and respect leave-no-trace rules. Download offline maps from MAPS.ME because the signal can be weak.
