A lake ecosystem of astonishing natural beauty, closely linked to the ancient city of Butrint, a World Heritage Site.
Butrint National Park, which includes the lake, is open daily from 8:00 to 20:00 in summer (May-September) and from 8:00 to 17:00 in winter. From Ksamil, take a ferry across the lake channel departing every 30 minutes from 8:30 to 19:00; the trip takes about 15 minutes. More info on the official Butrint website.
Admission to the National Park costs around 1,000 ALL (about 9 EUR) for adults in high season, plus 400-500 ALL for the round-trip ferry from Ksamil. Children and students pay less. Check updated prices at UNESCO Butrint.
It is recommended to allow 2-3 hours to explore the lake, the nearby ruins, and the museum. Including the ferry, half a day is ideal so you do not have to rush.
Butrint Lake is part of the ancient site of Butrint, a Greek city founded in the 8th century BC, later Roman and Byzantine, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its continuous historical value through the Middle Ages. It represents 2,500 years of overlapping civilizations.
Spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists. Go early in the morning to avoid the heat and enjoy perfect light for photos.
Access by ferry is easy, but the site has uneven paths and stairs among the ruins, making it only partially accessible. There is a main flat area near the lake; ask the staff at the entrance about adapted options.
Nearby are the paradise beaches of Ksamil with turquoise waters, the Blue Eye, a natural spring 20 minutes away by car, and the island of Corfu visible from the coast. Combine it with a day on the Albanian Riviera.
Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes for the rocky terrain; there is a small café, but a picnic is better. Buy tickets online if it is high season and use mosquito repellent near the lake. Information phone: +355 85 222 169.
