These impressive walls are the remains of one of the most important ancient cities on the Adriatic.
The archaeological site is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last entry at 5:30 p.m. You can get there by car from Fier (just 12 km away) by following the SH50 road. Free parking is available on site.
Yes, general admission costs 700 Albanian lek (approx. €6) and includes access to the entire Apollonia Archaeological Park. Children under 12 enter free. Check reduced rates on the official website.
We recommend allowing 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the walls and the full site. This includes time to enjoy the panoramic viewpoints over the Adriatic and photograph the best-preserved Byzantine remains.
They are part of the ancient Greek city of Apollonia (founded in 588 BC), one of the key cultural centers of the Mediterranean. The current walls are mainly Byzantine in date (4th-6th centuries AD), with sections reaching 4 meters in height.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures and fewer tourists. Avoid July-August because of the intense heat. The early morning hours are ideal for photos with golden light.
The terrain is uneven and covered with loose stones, so it is not fully accessible. There is a compacted main path but no ramps. Contact the museum (+355 69 555 8883) to request special assistance.
Take the opportunity to visit: the Apollonia Museum (500 m away), the Monastery of Saint Mary (13th century), and the Ancient Theatre. In Fier, notable sites include Ardenica Castle (20 km away) and the Muradie Mosque. More info: Albania Tourism.
Wear sturdy sports shoes, bring water, and use sunscreen (there is little shade). Don’t miss the Main Gate with its two semicircular towers and the northern stretch with views over the valley. Recommended tour: Multimedia Guide.
