Karavasta Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the largest in the Mediterranean, a vital wetland ecosystem.
Karavasta Lagoon is open all day, as it is a natural area. However, for the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours, ideally in the morning or at sunset. You can easily reach it by car from the town of Divjaka, following the signs to the lagoon.
Access to the lagoon area is generally free, as it is a natural park. If you choose to hire a boat tour to explore the lagoon and its islands, prices vary but are usually affordable. It is a good idea to negotiate directly with local operators at the pier.
For a relaxed visit, we suggest setting aside 2 to 3 hours. This will give you time to walk the trails, enjoy the views, and, if you wish, take a short boat ride. If you are passionate about birdlife, you may want to stay a little longer to watch the birds.
Karavasta is the largest lagoon in Albania and the heart of Divjaka-Karavasta National Park. It is home to one of the most important pelican colonies in the Mediterranean, making it an internationally renowned biodiversity sanctuary. It is a vital ecosystem for the conservation of migratory and native birds.
The best time of year is from spring to early autumn, from April to October, when the weather is pleasant and bird activity is at its peak. As for the best time of day, sunrise or sunset is spectacular for photography and wildlife watching in the golden light. Winter can be cold and windy.
Accessibility is limited. Natural areas and dirt trails can be difficult for wheelchairs or visitors with reduced mobility. The pier for boats may also be uneven. We recommend contacting a local operator by phone if you need specific assistance, such as booking a suitable private tour.
You are inside Divjaka-Karavasta National Park, so you can explore the impressive centuries-old pine woods known as the Pine Forest. In addition, the nearby coastal town of Divjaka offers beautiful Adriatic beaches and a seaside promenade. Do not miss a visit to the Rrasa e Zvarrisht forest reserve.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water, as there is little shade. Insect repellent is a good idea, especially at sunset. Book a boat tour with a local guide to better understand the history and wildlife; not only will you see the lagoon, but you will also support the local economy. Enjoy nature and leave no trace!
