Discover Diber Castle in Llixhat e Peshkopisë. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The castle is open 24 hours a day as an open-air historic ruin, but it is recommended to visit between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM for better visibility and safety. You can get there by car via the SH22 road from Peshkopi (about 10 minutes); use Google Maps or check Google Maps for precise directions.
Admission is free, as it is a public historic site managed by the local government. There are no hidden fees, but consider making a voluntary donation for its preservation. More info on Albania's official tourism website: Turizmi.gov.al.
It is recommended to spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the walls, towers, and panoramic views. If you use an audio guide, you can extend your visit to 2.5 hours for a more immersive experience.
Built in the 14th century during the Albanian medieval period, it served as a defensive fortress against Ottoman invasions and as the administrative center of the Diber region. Today, it represents the cultural heritage of northern Albanians and their historic resistance.
Spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists; avoid winter because of snow. Sunrise or sunset offers the best photos with golden light.
The main access is via a steep cobbled path, not suitable for wheelchairs; there are stairs in the upper areas. Contact Peshkopi Town Hall (+355 218 22 222) for special assistance or alternative routes.
Nearby are the Peshkopi waterfalls (5 km) and the Diber Ethnographic Museum (in central Peshkopi). Also explore Lurë National Park (1 hour by car) for nature. See the map on TripAdvisor.
Bring comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen; download an audio guide at IAudioguia.com for detailed history. Go with a local guide if you do not speak Albanian, and check the weather beforehand.
