Albania's first and only marine park, a biodiversity sanctuary where spectacular underwater landscapes and unique terrestrial ecosystems meet.
The park is open year-round, but access to the protected area is mainly through boat excursions from Vlorë or Orikum. The information office in Vlorë usually operates during summer hours (9:00-17:00). You can contact the park for updated details on its official website parkukombetar.gov.al or visit local tourism agencies in Vlorë to arrange your visit.
Access to the marine park costs approximately 500-800 lek (4-7€) per person for boat excursions, including visits to the caves and protected areas. Some agencies charge between 15-25€ per person for full tours that include hotel pickup. There is no physical ticket office at the sea access point; payments are made directly to the authorized boats.
A typical boat visit lasts between 3 and 4 hours, including the transfer, a visit to Haxhi Ali Cave, and exploration of the coastline. If you plan to go snorkeling or hiking in the land area of Karaburun, allow at least 5 to 6 full hours. We recommend starting early to enjoy the crystal-clear waters at their best.
This park protects one of Albania's richest marine areas, with the country's only coral reef and historic underwater caves such as Haxhi Ali Cave, historically used by smugglers. The Karaburun Peninsula was for centuries a strategic military zone, with remains of fortifications from the Cold War. The underwater rock formations and the unique Mediterranean ecosystem make this place a natural treasure.
The best time is from June to September, when the sea is calmer and the waters are ideal for snorkeling and seeing the underwater caves. Mornings (8:00-10:00) are ideal because there is less wind and the groups are smaller. Avoid November to February, when sea conditions can be unpredictable and there are fewer tour operators.
Access to the park is limited for people with reduced mobility, as the main visit is by boat and requires boarding and disembarking at small piers. The caves and land trails have rocky terrain and are not adapted. For specific accessibility information, contact the visitor center in Vlorë at +355 69 709 8461 or at parkukombetar.gov.al in advance.
Nearby you will find the coastal city of Vlorë with its beaches and the Independence Museum, as well as Orikum with its harbor and the ruins of the ancient Greek city. Karaburun Lighthouse and the unspoiled beaches of Gjipea are a short boat ride away. You can combine your visit with a tour of the Southern Coastal Route, which includes Dhërmi and Himarë.
Bring sunscreen, water, and non-slip footwear, as the rocks can be slippery. Book with certified local operators in Vlorë and check the sea forecast before departure. Carry cash in lek or euros for boat payments, and do not forget your camera: Haxhi Ali Cave and the crystal-clear waters offer spectacular photo opportunities.
