Discover the rich history and mystery of Elbasan Castle, an Ottoman gem in the heart of Albania.
As it is a lived-in neighborhood within the fortress, the site is open 24 hours a day, every day. You can enter freely on foot through the main gate near the Clock Tower; here is the Google Maps location so you can get there easily.
Access to the streets and walled area of the castle is completely free. You will only need to pay a small fee if you decide to enter specific museums or private sites within the complex, but walking through history is free.
For a relaxed visit while enjoying the architecture, we recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and one hour. If you plan to eat at one of its traditional restaurants or use a detailed audio guide, allow around 2 hours.
It is a 15th-century gem built by Sultan Mehmed II over ancient Roman fortifications along the Via Egnatia. Its great value lies in being a living settlement where Ottoman and Roman history coexist with everyday modern life.
Spring and autumn are ideal thanks to the mild weather. We recommend going at sunset, when the golden light highlights the stones of the walls and the atmosphere on the inner terraces is unbeatable.
Access is possible, but keep in mind that many streets still have their original cobblestones, which can make wheelchair movement difficult. The main routes are flat, but visiting with a companion is recommended for greater comfort.
Right next door, you can visit the Ethnographic Museum to better understand the local culture. We also recommend walking to the Naziresha Mosque or exploring the modern city center that surrounds the walls.
Do not leave without trying Tavë Kosi at one of the restaurants inside the walls, and wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones. To understand what you are seeing, we suggest downloading an audio guide at iaudioguia.com to enrich your experience.
