A fascinating journey into Albania’s geological and cultural past, where nature sculpted the landscape and humans left their mark.
The cave is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Mondays). It is located 4 km from the center of Bulqizë. You can get there by private vehicle or local taxi. We recommend confirming opening hours with the Bulqizë Tourism Office: www.bashkiabulqize.gov.al.
General admission costs 300 Albanian lek (approx. €3). Students pay 150 lek. Children under 8 enter free. Cash only is accepted. Tickets are purchased at the site ticket office.
The full visit takes between 60 and 90 minutes. It includes about 850 meters of accessible passageways with 12 main points of interest. The route is one-way, with a mandatory guide for groups.
It formed 10 million years ago and served as a partisan refuge during World War II. Its local name, 'Shpella e Gurrave,' means 'Cave of Stones,' highlighting its unique limestone formations. In 2018, it was declared a protected Natural Monument.
Spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) are best due to stable interior temperatures (12°C year-round). Avoid July-August because of heavy visitor traffic. Mornings between 10 and 12 are the least crowded times.
Only partially. The first 150 meters are adapted, but the rest has uneven stairs (118 steps in total) and damp ground. There are no adapted restrooms. Non-slip footwear and good physical condition are recommended.
We recommend: 1) Bulqizë History Museum (18 minutes away), 2) Ostren Waterfalls (40 km), 3) Historic chromium mines (guided tours). Download the Dibër tourist map here: Dibër Map.
Closed non-slip shoes, a light jacket (the cave stays at 12°C), a small flashlight (the main passageways are lit but other areas are not), and water. Touching rock formations and bringing large backpacks are not allowed (lockers are available at the entrance).
