A culinary and cultural journey into the heart of Ottoman tradition in Borsh, Albania.
As this is an open historic site (the Castle ruins and the Ottoman area), it is generally accessible during daylight hours, with morning visits recommended to avoid the strongest heat. Access is via a steep road from the village of Borsh; you can drive up most of the way and finish with a short walk of about 15 minutes.
At present, access to explore the Ottoman ruins and the fortification is usually free, which is a great advantage for travelers. However, I recommend always carrying some cash, as local policies may change or you may want to buy local products from nearby vendors.
To enjoy the place without rushing, take in the atmosphere, and get good photos, I recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and one hour. If you are a history enthusiast who listens to every detail of our audio guide, you may want to stay a little longer to enjoy the panoramic views.
This site is a crucial testimony to Albanian history, especially highlighting the 18th-century Haxhi Bendo Mosque, a jewel of Ottoman architecture that survived turbulent times. It is the only building still standing within the walls, symbolizing the cultural and religious heritage of the region under Ottoman rule.
Without a doubt, the golden hour just before sunset offers magical light for photography and a much more pleasant temperature. The months of May, June, and September are ideal for avoiding the August crowds and enjoying the tranquility the place deserves.
Please note that this is a historic ruin on a hill with uneven, rocky ground and steep slopes. Unfortunately, access for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility is very difficult and is not currently adapted.
Make the most of your visit by relaxing on Borsh Beach, the longest beach stretch on the Ionian Sea in Albania. I also highly recommend visiting the nearby village of Qeparo, divided between its newer area and its charming old stone quarter in the mountains.
Wear sports or hiking shoes, as the ground is unstable and flip-flops can be dangerous here. Also, do not forget to bring water and sun protection, since there are no shops at the top and you will be exposed to the sun while enjoying the views.
