A thousand-year-old fortress rising majestically above the city of Berat, Albania, blending history, architecture, and legends.
Berat Castle is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM in high season (April-October), and until 6:00 PM in winter; check the official tourism website for updates. It is easily reached on foot from central Berat by climbing the cobbled streets; if you are driving, there is nearby parking in Ura Vajgurore. For more details, see Albania Tourism.
Admission to Berat Castle is free, but if you visit the Onufri Iconographic Museum inside, it costs around 300 Albanian lek (about €3). Children and students receive discounts. Buy tickets at the entrance; more info at UNESCO Berat.
It is recommended to allow 1-2 hours to explore the main castle, the walls, and the panoramic views. If you include the museum inside, add another 30-45 minutes. It is ideal for a relaxed morning visit.
Originally built in the 4th century BC by the Illyrians and later fortified by the Byzantines and Ottomans, Berat Castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 and is a symbol of Albania's multicultural history. It contains inhabited Ottoman houses and offers views of the 'City of a Thousand Windows.'
Spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists; avoid July-August because of the heat. Go early in the morning for the best photos with good light and fewer crowds.
Access is partial: the cobbled streets and stairs make it difficult for wheelchairs, but there are alternative less steep routes from Ura Vajgurore. I recommend contacting the Berat visitor center at +355 582 22600 for assistance.
Nearby you will find Berat Old Town (a UNESCO site), the Ethnographic Museum, and Gorica Bridge. In Ura Vajgurore, explore rural landscapes and combine your visit with a walk along the Osum River. See the map at Visit Berat.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven terrain, and bring water and sunscreen; try local food such as byrek at nearby restaurants. Download an audio guide at IAudioguia to enrich the experience. Avoid weekends if you are looking for peace and quiet.
