Audio Guide of Butrint Acropolis

Butrint National Park, where the Acropolis is located, is open every day from 8:00 AM until sunset. To get there, the easiest way is to take the bus from Sarandë (it leaves every hour) or go by taxi; the main entrance is clearly signposted.

Access to the Acropolis is included in the general ticket for Butrint National Park, which costs about 1,000 LEK (around €10). Children and school groups usually receive reduced rates, so bring identification.

A full visit to the park usually takes between 2 and 3 hours at a relaxed pace. The Acropolis is at the end of the route and deserves at least 30 minutes so you can enjoy the castle museum and the panoramic views.

It is the defensive heart of the ancient city, showing layers of history from archaic Greek walls to Venetian and Ottoman fortifications. In addition to the ruins, it houses an excellent museum that explains why this site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I recommend going early in the morning (8–9 AM) or late in the afternoon to watch the sunset from the castle. Avoid the middle of the day in July and August, as the heat and humidity can be intense.

You should know that access to the Acropolis is difficult for people with reduced mobility because of the slopes, steps, and uneven ground. Although parts of the lower park are flatter, reaching the top of the castle requires physical effort.

Right below the Acropolis, don’t miss the ancient Roman Theatre and the Baptistery with its mosaics (if they are uncovered). Outside the park, the beaches of Ksamil are only a 10-minute drive away for a refreshing swim.

Wear very comfortable shoes with good grip, as the stones can be slippery, and don’t forget mosquito repellent if you go in summer. To truly understand what you are seeing, we suggest bringing a good audio guide downloaded in advance.
